The two started out as very similar cars, but then during the mid to late 70's Ford decided to make the Cougar more of a "luxury" muscle car and started using the same frame and body panels as the Thunderbird and Lincoln Mark V and continued to do so until they discontinued all three cars in the 90's. Bringing back the Cougar in the smaller (Mondeo based) version could have been a win, but only if they could have continued with the XR-7 version which had a V8 under the hood, unfortunately the V6 they used was underpowered and diehard Cougar fans just couldn't bring themselves to liking the new version.

I had a 79 model XR-7 with the big 351 modified V8, thing was dead quiet off the mark, and people were really shocked to find it had such a large engine. It was a good car until I stripped out the reverse gear….

The last good Cougar and Mustang was 1970. Maybe 73 for the 'Stang
Everything else afterward was crap. No apologies, they were crap.

Besides, look at what happened to all the muscle cars from that era. If they didn't die out they got ugly and crappy. All of them.

Cars now are transportation. Cars then were statements.
