I had one, it was cool. I would have one again if I didn't have my 911.

That is one ugly car. It looks like some Italian cheapo company created their own version of a Porsche, and somehow it mysteriously got integrated into the real Porsche line.

The 914 is great lookin compared to that monstosity of a “luxury sedan” 4-door their crankin out now. But that’s my opinion. And something I’ve learned over the years is automakers will build the ugliest things on the planet and people will buy them.

FYI… the 914 was taken out of production because the 914-6 was out performing Porche's flagship car… the 911.

absolutely more popular these days than ever before. If you want a classic air cooled Porsche at a reasonable price the 914 is it. Simple car to repair and restore, parts are reasonable and plentiful, and when you are finished restoring you have a true Porsche sports car that handles like nothing else in its class, is a safe convertible, and gets great gas mileage on regular fuel!

The 914 is quite unique in its styling, handling, and performance. It got a really bad rap when it was introduced because the 1.7L 4-cyclinder engine was just too underpowered. The 2.0L 4-cylinder engine introduced in 1973 gave the car almost enough HP to be really fun. But its association with VW was probably the biggest strike against it.

Today the 914 is a classic 1970's sports car with simplicity, great handling, and a lot of options for upgraded power. Wider wheels, bigger brakes, fender flares, Subaru, Chevy V8, big 4-cyclinder 914 and 6-cyclinder 911 engines are all upgrades possible to a really great handling mid-engine sports car. One only needs to drive one for a while to understand its strong points.

When we go out in the 914 I get more people talking about it than my friends $100k cars. Most want to buy it or once had one and wish they could have it back. Best value in vintage cars. Does anyone collent a 924 or 944? (Maybe the 944 Turbo)

Ugly…No, But is a classic that now is becoming very collectible. Read Excellence magazine and check out the positive articles there. This car outsold the Porsche 356 and was first place in it's class at the 1970 Leman and 6th overall. The 914-6 production was stopped due to it out performing the Porsche flagship 911.

Best performing Porsche for the true sports car lovers. will out handle all cars in its class. A lot more fun to drive than my 911 I have many 914s and will own many more, got my first pair of 914s in 1979 have been having fun with them ever since. A true classic sports car still growing more popular and increasing in value.

Not only did Porsche sell more 914s in fewer years then the 356, but the 914 sales were with a falling dollar. The only true downside of the 914 was that people wanted the -6 for the price of a -4.

It's pretty tough to come down on a car that is still winning Porsche Club national autocross FTDs some 40 years after it was first produced. Though the styling has always been different, it has held up well over the years (compare with early 70s Japanese cars) and still looks fresh. The colors were fun, and these cars are really just large gokarts for adults. I wish someone would make something this much fun today (though the Miata comes close in that department). Check the prices on used ones (especially the 914-6s if you can find one for sale) to see how unloved these are today.

The 914 unloved? You've gotta be kidding me. Take a look at the 924.

I love my 914, I drive it every chance I get and get more compliments on it than any other car I've ever owned. Another great thing about it is not seeing another one on the road very often and the interesting colors.
The examples of the 20+ pictures above don't really solidify this author's argument…they look like some of the best examples out there!
